Smyth edges tight contest

JIM Smyth picked up Whittaker's 36-hole President's Cup on Sunday, but it was a close run thing.

At the end of a very tight Saturday's opener the nine handicapper found himself a shot down to Ian Butterworth who plays off 17.

The roles were reversed 24 hours later, with Smyth pipping Butterworth by one to have them finishing on 132. The prize was handed to Smyth because he had the better second-round score.

Daryl Kernick, off four, took third place with 133.

In the President's Cup at Rochdale, first place went to Phil Whitworth with a 63 - one better than Derek Gill, with David Platt another shot back in third.

Ross Mackie didn't finish among the leaders in the President's qualifier at Tunshill, but he had the satisfaction of a hole in one at the second - the second time he has aced that particular hole.

The demanding against par Frank Taylor Cup at Lobden went to Chris Chrimes who finished five up, ahead of Tony Rudge and Mike Poulton.

Manchester's prestigious 36-hole scratch Hulbert Trophy - one of the most sought-after pieces of silver in the North West - was won by St Annes Old Links youngster Sam Stuart who, playing off plus two, produced cards of 67 and 71 to pip Alex Hogben (plus one) of Ringway by one.

Home golfer Matt Hough (scratch) edged out club colleague and last year's winner Gareth Clark (plus one).

Liz Birkbeck won the bragging rights at home when she beat mother Lynn to first place in the senior division of the Rochdale Ladies' monthly medal.
