Hopwood’s golden girl wins England selection

THE rise and rise of Hopwood's golden girl Rachel Connor picked up pace this week with the news that she has been selected for the England girls' team to compete in the European team championships in Oslo next month.
The 16-year-old scratch player, who has set her sights on a place in the Great Britain and Ireland squad for the Curtis Cup against America next year, boosted her chances by reaching the final of the Lancashire ladies' championship, losing at the second extra hole.
On the domestic front, 17 handicapper Martin Young carded a 64 to romp to victory in Tunshill's Crowther Rose Ball. He had three shots to spare over Barry Lowe, Arthur Sanderson, Dave Foster, Andrew Sanderson and Jason Bamford.
Young's 64 was matched by Springfield's Dave Dewhurst and that was good enough to give him a three-stroke cushion to clinch Sunday's all-winners' title competed for by all the 2006 champions.
Whittaker Ladies competed for one of their board prizes - the Alice Holden Trophy - and an impressive 68 gave Lynne Weight a five-shot triumph ahead of Jill Keogh.
But it was much tighter when Springfield Ladies scrapped it out for Susan Fletcher's prize, Glenys Bentley getting the nod after a countback.
