Firefighters in red-hot form

THE ability to stay cool and calm under pressure is a trademark of firefighters. Now, it seems, it is a habit they carry on to the golf course.

Before clocking on for a night shift at Chadderton Fire Station, Don Powell had enough time to win the division one of Tunshill's stableford, with ex-fireman Arthur Sanderson taking third spot.

Meanwhile, another fireman, Jason Rain, was setting the Milnrow course alight by taking the second division prize.

If it was firefighters in the spotlight at Tunshill, it was council members at Whittaker where greens chairman Daryl Kernick won Saturday's stableford with 38 points.

In second place was vice-captain Paul Fox, with president Les Kernick taking third spot.

Manchester's Terry Barrett is in a rich seam of form. After taking first place in the midweek stableford - he had three points to spare over the runner-up - he partnered Harry Malpass into second place in the Easter fourball competition which was won by Neville Lund and Eddie Oakley. Phil Jones and John Richardson finished third.

Another former fireman, Rochdale's Roger Smith, aced the seventh during the Canadian foursomes, but it was John Parkinson and Steve Cunningham who took first place.

Sixteen golfers from Rochdale recently made their annual 'pilgrimage' to the Costa del Sol and, blessed with great weather, they played five testing courses - Santa Maria, Los Naranjos, Rio Real, Los Flamingos and Santana. Consistency won Dave Tully the 'golfer of the week' title.
