KENNY Gill could not have wished for a better start to his captaincy of Lobden.
With the help of Phil Harwood, Gill lifted the opening day stableford - by the narrowest of margins.
Their 39 points was matched by Peter Chadwick and Peter Collins as well as by Gaurin Harrison and Chris Heap, but a countback put them in first place.
Another tight finish came in the medal at Whittaker where Peter Hall's 70 just pipped Peter Holroyd and Chris Weight.
Gary Fitton won the Gardner Trophy at Pike Fold. He had a two-shot cushion over Steve Fox and Andy Greenwood.
Rochdale's opening day better ball was won by Geoff Ford and Ernie Johnson.
Their 42 was only just good enough to see off Steve Williamson and Nigel Fitton. Graham Shepherd and Steve Royle, plus Ray Clegg and Chris Chrimes also chalked up 41 points.
Rochdale Ladies opened their season with a 12-hole three-ball stableford and 48 points were good enough to give victory to Sue Bamford, Eleanor Bell and Glenis Walker
