ROCHDALE Mayfield had William Hill at scrum-half, but all bets were off as they handed out a 17-try mauling to Pennine League division three team Hollinwood in the semi-final of the Standard Cup at Castleton Sports Centre on Wednesday night.

The gulf in class was apparent from the off as Mayfield winger Rob Kershaw scored a hat-trick of tries in the opening 10 minutes, the first coming after only 40 seconds.

It was like shelling peas and, although the visitors - who have won just one of their 18 league matches this season - never gave up, it was an embarrassingly one-sided affair.

Mayfield's forwards rampaged through the wafer-thin Hollinwood rearguard at will to provide the perfect platform for half-backs Hill and Neil Goulden to swing the ball wide.

They did so to good effect with tries coming thick and fast for the home team. The best of these came in the 78th minute, Ste Wood finding the energy to sprint 70 yards to touch down between the sticks.

Mayfield's tries were scored by Kershaw (4), Goulden, Wood (4), Hill (2), Tony Appleyard, Wes Bobo, Ste Bamber, Paul Howley, Andy Reid, Neil Ramsden.

Goulden slotted over seven conversions and Reid added two more.

Best on a comfortable night for Mayfield were Reid, Chris Hilton and the half-back pairing of Hill and Goulding.
