THE North West Regional Championships were held in Wigan last weekend and Rochdale's Sparks centre team returned home with four title holders.

Rachel Marsden led the way in the nine-year age group.

A superb performance saw her take the overall Voluntaries title which, added to her Compulsories title from earlier in the year, made her the North West combined overall champion.

She also won silver medals on bars and beam.

Harriet Brookes took the overall silver in the 11-year Voluntaries, plus the bars and floor titles.

For good measure she won bronzes on vault and beam.

As she was already the North West Compulsories champion, this made her the Combined overall champion.

Marsden and Brookes are the first gymnasts from the Rochdale area to win these prestigious Combined regional titles. Both now go forward to represent the North West in the national finals in Guildford, in November.

Lauren Ball, aged 12, also became a North West champion. She competed in the modified open age section and took gold on bars and beam, silver on vault and bronze on floor.

Zoe Morris, aged 12, rounded off Sparks' excellent day by winning the floor title in her age group.

Sparks' other successes were Ashley Edwards, 15, who won silver overall and silver on bars, and Amelia Cockayne-Seddon, 10, who won silver on floor.

Sparks' coaching director Steve Halliwell said: "These girls are now a formidable team, and I am delighted that all their hard work is bringing them such success. These titles are a huge step forward for gymnastics in Rochdale."

I used to go to the same gym as them when i was a gymnast and they are sooooooooo god when they get into action and sometimes you feel like your heart skips a beat with some of the moves they do as it is breath taking, it is really to hard to explain. from Emma
