Matt ends Clough treble hopes

Rochdale Observer Junior Bowls Tournament

MICHAEL Clough's dream of winning the Rochdale Observer Junior Bowls Tournament for a third time on the bounce evaporated in the afternoon sunshine at Broadfield Park on Sunday.

The winner's trophy instead went to Matt Adams of the Summit club in Heywood who beat Wardle's Clough 21-19 in a final which had its moments.

Adams opened up a 13-2 lead, but Clough chipped his way back into contention and after 27 ends it was 17-16 in favour of Adams.

Adams then scored a double and single to go all-but, only for Clough to come back again at 19.

Adams checked out on the 32nd end when his first bowl proved enough to give him the title.

Adams had a scare in the third round when he was taken to the wire by Matt Hargreaves, but he then slipped into gear with a 21-13 win and a crushing 21-7 semi-final win over Phillip Jump.

He had 14 on the board before Jump got going.

Clough reached the final by way of a 21-15 semi win over Craig Cosgrove.

There was some superb bowling throughout the competition which was marshalled by Tim Rothwell and Joyce Jones.
