The boys Dunn good in first contest

MEMBERS of Rochdale's Kaizen-Do Karate Club were among the medals in a contest held at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre in Bradford.

With the exception of Kevin Merriman (senior instructor) and William Anderson (squad coach) the team had its first taste of competition.

Aaron Merriman and Sam Gilson won bronze medals in the Kata section. Sam Halligan, Vincent Tomlinson and Ashley Prince also won Kata bronzes in their respective age groups.

Kevin Merriman won bronze in the senior weapons Kata.

Another six medals were won in the Kumite.

Sam Halligan and Adam Lord fought brilliantly but narrowly missed out on the finals.

Aaron Merriman was up against older and heavier opponents but showed exceptional determination and skill to claim a well-earned bronze.

Dan Walton, a blue belt, was matched against brown and black belts on his road to the final and a silver medal.

Kevin Merriman had to draw on all his experience to reach the semi-finals. He finished with a bronze medal.

William Walsh was performer of the day. He won the 12/13-year Kumite to become a national champion.

William Walsh, Aaron Merriman, Adam Lord, Vincent Tomlinson and Sam Halligan were later chosen to fight for Great Britain.

Kevin Merriman said: "We have worked hard in the past two years and it is extremely gratifying for me and the other Senseis to be rewarded with such achievements."

   I have children that go to kaizen-do and its without a doubt the best club in rochdale. kevin is excellent with all his students young and old alike. and all members that took part in bradford deserve a big pat on the back.
