Lord makes most of weather

OUT came the sun and down tumbled the scores in the weekend competitions.

Take Whittaker, for instance. It was President's Trophy weekend and Steve Lord came out of nowhere to take Les Kernick's prize. The 12 handicapper did not figure in the first three on Saturday, but 24 hours later a blistering 61 gave him a 132 total and a one-shot victory over Darrell Kernick, another who did not finish in the leading three the day before. Peter Davies added a 66 to his first round 68, but it was only good enough to give him third place.

Consistency was the name of the game for Manchester's Carl Thompson. The three-handicapper produced rounds of 68 and 67 to take the prestigious Hopwood Classic, one ahead of Steve Berry (65 and 71). Mick Lawler's 65 and 74 gave him third spot.

Ian Butterworth, playing off 13, beat Graham Shepherd on a card play-off to win the captain's second qualifier at Rochdale. John Broadbent didn't have the best of days, but his 74 was good enough to give him the President's Cup in a play-off with Dave Hanson. They had both shot 67s the week before.

Consolation for Hanson came on Tuesday in the shape of a hole in one.

Bob Duffy and Graham Buckley linked up well to produce a winning 62 in the better ball medal at Tunshill. The day after, Tom Buckley's 42 points gave him the Tunshill Juniors' Lady President's prize, two ahead of Danny Halkyard.
