Rochdale Online League Cup Final
Dog and Partridge 2
Heywood Reform 1

DOG and Partridge completed a double when they beat Heywood Reform at Phoenix Park in Heywood.

The Rochdale Sunday League champions edged a 2-1 win in the final of the Rochdale Online League Cup.

Reform were quick off the mark and won a freekick on the edge of the area with only two minutes played. The ball was drilled into the box, but Kevin Bates' shot was easily saved by Ian Tyson.

Dog hit back when Nick Dowsing beat his man and knocked over a cross to Michael Barker whose header was saved by Lee Grogan.

Reform, with an extra man in midfield, unsettled Dog, and Tyson had to be quick off his line to thwart Craig Winter after Brian Blackledge had played a neat through ball.

Dog then settled into their stride and started to string useful passing moves together.

David Walsh might have done better with a shot over the bar before Reform were given an almighty scare.

Dowsing played a good one- two with Barker and sent a cross into the box which Grogan fumbled and dropped. Luckily for him team-mate Andrew Tinker was on hand to clear the danger.

Davey Luker almost opened the scoring on 30 minutes. His cross deceived Grogan and looked to be heading for the top corner, but Grogan managed to recover and save.

Back came Reform. A shot from Winter was deflected and Tyson had to pull off a finger-tip save.

Luker went close but fired into the side netting on 60 minutes, while Walsh was played in but could not keep his shots on target.

Trevor Jopson and John Luker were strong at the back for Dog as they came under pressure.

The breakthrough finally arrived on 70 minutes. Walsh sent over a corner cross and Davey Luker headed the ball back across defenders and Grogan into the net.

It became 2-0 five minutes later when, from a freekick, Mick Moody knocked the ball to Walsh, he played it to Davey Luker, and his first-time cross found Jepson unmarked at the far post.

With time running out Reform pushed men forward and pulled a goal back through Mike Weatherilt.

They continued to go for goal but almost got caught out when a cross from Walsh found Chris McCarroll with only the keeper to beat. His shot hit the bar and rebounded to Jepson who fired wide, but by then Dog had done enough to clinch the trophy.

Walsh was deemed man of the match for Dog.

What a great story. But were you aware that another Heywood team did the double aswell? The Three Terriers were champions of Division 2 and won their Division Trophy on the same day Heywood Reform came 2nd in their Division Trophy. I think that is a great achievement for a team that has been going for 9 years, some of the original players still playing and now looking forward to a great season in the first division!!! Would be fantastic if we could have a mention - our presentation is on the 10th July at The Brunswick in Heywood, tickets only, price to be confirmed. Thank you Regards Mandi Barton Treasurer
