Golden award for sporting school

22/ 2/2005

ASHFIELD Valley Primary School has received the prestigious Activemark Gold Award from Sport England.

Last year's AAA 400m hurdles champion Katie Jones visited the school on Friday to present the award to staff and children.

It was given to the school in recognition of its outstanding commitment to physical activity.

Ashfield Valley has a full PE curriculum and an extensive range of after-school sports activities which are open to all children between the ages of seven and 11.

The school has links with Rochdale Football Club, RMBC sports coach Mohammed Zarafat, and Siddal Moor Sports College which offers a sports co-ordinator partnership.

Sport England's chief executive Roger Draper congratulated the school on its achievement and said: "We need to emphasise the benefits of sport and physical activity to young people through positive first experience at school.

"Those awarded the Activemark are doing that. They have encouraged pupils to be active both in and out of lessons."
