Harriers blow hot and cold on way to leading honours

MIDDLETON Harriers tested themselves in extreme conditions, running in the heat of Lanzarote and the cold of the Arctic Circle.

In December the Harriers, who have a large membership from Rochdale, organised a trip for club members and associates.

The week's holiday in Lanzarote was timed to coincide with the island's Running Festival which included the Lanzarote marathon, half-marathon and a series of 10,000m road races.

Middleton's ladies enjoyed success in the veterans' events. Teresa Hollins won the 50s category, while clubmate Alison Holmes was third in the 45s.

Andrea Worrall finished the marathon in a very creditable time of 4 hrs 30 mins.

Alison Holmes then tried her hand in the other extreme, and put on her spiked boots to run a half-marathon.

After travelling to Tromse in the Arctic Circle she completed the 13-mile Polar Night Race course atop a glacier. Alison was the first overseas female runner to finish.

Newcomers are welcome to train with Harriers and their qualified coach Eddie Milne at their base in Hopwood Hall College's sports centre.

Training is on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Beginners' sessions are held on Tuesdays. For more information contact Barry Bowden on 07966 240029.
