Gilbert’s goal lifts Gabs off the bottom

CASTLETON Gabriels are off the bottom of the North West Counties League Division Two for the first time in months.

They travelled to play New Mills on Saturday and claimed the only goal of the game.

A heavy pitch was passed for play only 30 minutes before kick-off and Gabs found themselves under early pressure.

The Millers' leading scorer Wild shot wide when sent clear then beat keeper Canning only for his shot to hit a post.

Gabs suffered a double blow inside 15 minutes when they lost both central defenders due to injuries, but they came to life and pushed New Mills back.

Baxendale brought a good save out of the keeper and Mills conceded countless freekicks as Gabs applied pressure.

Gabs continued to play well in the second half and it was no surprise when they broke the deadlock on 60 minutes.

Entwistle found Jimmy Gilbert with a superb ball and the midfielder found the net.

Mills responded by throwing players forward, but with defenders working hard Canning had only one shot to save which he did easily.

All Gabs' players did well, but the back four of Hicks, Armstrong, Hatton and Entwistle were the rock on which Gabs produced their best display and best result of the season.

Gabs entertain Silsden at Butterworth Park on Saturday, kick-off 2pm.
