MISSED... Jack Grindrod.
MISSED... Jack Grindrod.

Ex-chairman Jack will be sadly missed

4/ 1/2005

FORMER Hornets chairman Jack Grindrod died suddenly at his Bacup home on Sunday aged 80.

He was a wealthy Littleborough-based haulage contractor when he joined the Hornets board in March 1971. His impact on the club was almost immediate.

Within a matter of months the club shocked the Rugby League world by signing Frank Myler as player-coach, and the arrival of the former Great Britain captain brought about a dramatic improvement in the team's fortunes.

Big names followed Myler to the Athletic Grounds, including Tom Brophy, Willie Aspinall and Bill Holliday, and in the space of three seasons Hornets reached the finals of the BBC Floodlit Trophy, the Lancashire Cup and the Players' No 6 Trophy.

Mr Grindrod also became Hornets' representative on the Rugby League council and in 1982 he was chairman of the Rugby League.
