Hey wins Pennine’s top award

JOHN Hey took the top award when West Pennine Road Club held its presentation night at the Broadfield Hotel.

He received the Prestige Trophy following his epic performance in the Norseman Xtreme triathlon in Norway.

The club's time trial champion was, once again, Kev Shand who backed that up with eight other club championship awards.

Peter Hey took the road race title, while the veterans' time trial champion was Ron Mellor.

The Frank Hudson Memorial Trophy, for events based on the Brock course at Garstang, was won by Richard Taylor. Mark Hulme picked up the 25-mile handicap cup.

Daniel Shand was named junior champion. He was also third in the senior 25-mile championship.

The Eva Benson Trophy for Pennine's 25-mile open (ladies) was won for the second year running by Sue Cheetham of North Lancs Road Club.

The trophies were handed out by top guest Julian Ramsbottom.

• THE club's dinner weekend was overshadowed by the death of Keith Gilbertson at the age of 64.

He had been a member of West Pennine since the mid-1950s and had been a club champion in every respect.

His golden years were perhaps from 1976 to 1980, when his name consistently featured among the winners.

In 1979 he was 12th in the highly prestigious season-long Best British All-rounder competition. That year he was a popular winner of the Lancashire Road Club 12-hour race.

Away from racing Keith was an enthusiastic member of the club's challenge ride group.
