THREE hundred children took part in the annual Middleton Harriers primary schools cross-country championships on Saturday.

This was the 10th staging of the championships, and what started as an event for Middleton schools now attracts teams from Rochdale and Oldham.

Eight Middleton schools, 13 Rochdale schools and six from Oldham accounted for a record 27 entries for the six races.

The official starter was Brian Beal.

Norden Community School, Chadderton Hall Junior and Greenacres Primary took the main trophies.

Rochdale's deputy mayor, Councillor Angela Coric, and deputy mayoress Kathleen Rowen Pennington were on hand to give out the prizes on what was a special day for all the runners.

Middleton Harriers' official Jack Kirk praised all those involved. He said: "I would like to thank the school staff and the children for their enthusiasm."

"I would also like to thank Alan Brocklehurst, and Stephen and Linda Pearce, the backbone of the organising committee for their hard work, not forgetting the Middleton Harriers who acted as marshalls and time-keepers."
