Trust boost

A HUGE step has been taken towards setting up an organisation to give Hornets fans their say.

Rochdale Township Fund Grants Sub-Committee donated £1,000 to the emerging Rochdale Hornets Supporters Trust, which is aiming to strengthen links, raise much-needed cash and promote rugby league. Members will also have a say in running Hornets.

Andy Birch, a Hornets NestEgg member, said: "The government is encouraging smaller clubs to set up these trusts and we need the money because the trust has to be set up as a legal entity. Football clubs can get funding from Supporters Direct, but rugby clubs can't."

Councillor John Beasley suggested giving the start-up costs of £900 and the committee agreed to providing the full £1,000.

NestEgg's Jim Stringer said: "We're grateful to the council for their help. It will make history by becoming the first local authority to help set up a rugby league supporters' trust. We will still be called Hornets NestEgg, but our legal status will change."
