Joe's race boosts Olympic coffers

ROCHDALE runners are getting behind the British Olympic team with a timely fund-raising boost.

The annual Joe Salt Race, run over the hills around Littleborough, will see all proceeds donated to the British Olympic Appeal.

The 5km road and trail event, which takes place on Wednesday 14 April (7pm start), is named after stalwart Joe who has been a major figure on the local scene for more than 50 years.

Race organiser Andy O'Sullivan was joined by Commonwealth Games 1,500m finalist Kerry Gillibrand, from Baxenden, and Rochdale Harrier Dave Proctor to launch the race.

Andy said: "Every penny will go to the British Olympic Appeal in London to give our athletes a boost for this year's Games in Athens." There are prizes for every finisher and they will get orange juice and sandwiches in the Falcon Inn after the race."

The event, sponsored by Flexys UK, costs £3.50 for club runners and £4.50 for unattached athletes. Entry is 50p extra on the night.
