ROCHDALE Hornets edged out Keighley Cougars in an untidy Arriva
Trains Cup match at Spotland.
A bitterly cold wind and finger numbing temperatures weren't
conducive to good rugby - and so it proved in a game littered with
handling errors and knock-ons.
The home side took the lead with a Lee Birdseye penalty after three
minutes and went further ahead when Paul Anderson's off-load put
Andy Gorski over for a try. Birdseye converted.
Six minutes later the the ball was moved wide to powerful centre
Richard Varkulis who brushed aside Karl Smith's attempted tackle
and ran clear for Hornets' second.
Keighley's only score of a scrappy first-half came from an Adam
Mitchell penalty as the home side led 12-2 at the break. But the
visitors made a dream start to the second period when Andy Robinson
took advantage of a hesitant Hornets defence to score from the
first set of six. Mitchell converted.
The home side's response was immediate as powerful prop Mark
Costello forced his way over from close range and Birdseye
converted.
Chances went begging for both sides as the ball went to ground at
crucial moments.
But Keighley were given a glimmer of hope when Lee Patterson
crashed over. Mitchell converted to put his side within four points
of Hornets.
Hornets hung on to net their first points of the campaign.
