Andrew retains open mind after a winning 2003

GOING down, but on the up, that's Andrew Terry after a scintillating golfing year.

The 19-year-old, a member at Springfield Park and Manchester, shaved five shots off his handicap following a succession of victories.

Terry started the year with a handicap of four. He now plays off plus one

In February he won the Springfield Park monthly medal. The following month he achieved a hole in one on the 231-yard par three 16th hole at Heaton Park and finished with a nett 63.

Terry proved to be no fool in April as he won the club medal at Manchester and equalled the Springfield Park course record with a seven under par nett 64. He broke this 10-year-old record two months later with a nett 63.

With the sun on his back the in-form golfer was inspired to greater heights. In August and September he netted Springfield Park's K Darcy Memorial Trophy and secured the Junior Championship at Manchester.

Terry's efforts were recognised in December when he was called up for winter training with the Lancashire squad.

To cap a fantastic 12 months, during Springfield Park's presentations at the Royal Toby he received the Player of the Year award and the Rose Bowl for the best gross score of the year.

Terry now aims to qualify for this year's Open Championship at Royal Troon.

He said: "My aim at the beginning of 2003 was to try to get down to scratch so that I could enter the qualifiers for the Open. I did that in June when I broke the course record, but it was just too late for me to enter the 2003 Open."
