ROCHDALE might be feeling the pressure at the foot of the North of England League premier division after 10 defeats in 11 outings this season.

But they showed plenty of character in the first round of the Daily Telegraph Senior Flags last weekend with a shock 12-11 victory over Wilmslow.

The Bridgefold Road club trailed 6-4 and 11-9 but they dug deep to mount a memorable winning comeback.

Stuart Swithinbank scored a late winner to earn his side a quarter-final showdown with Heaton Mersey, the runaway league leaders.

Defeat left Dan Green, the Wilmslow captain, deflated and "very disappointed". He said: "We thought it was going to be a rout after the way we started in the first quarter.

"But we went to pot and forced the ball too much which allowed Rochdale to fight back. The whole team is upset."

Chris Mountney and Ashley Tarran-Jones did the bulk of the damage for Wilmslow with four goals each, but hat-tricks from Chaz Bulera and Martin Humphries, as well as goals from Matt Nugent (2), Mark Binns (2), Dave Bamford and Swithinbank sealed Rochdale's victory.
