Darren’s a Shaw thing
9/ 1/2004
HORNETS' coach Bobbie Goulding is a desperate man. Desperate to succeed.
And to help him achieve that success he has lined up experienced forward Darren Shaw as his assistant-coach.
The former Brisbane, London Broncos, Castleford, Sheffield, Salford and Oldham player was due to put pen to paper as the Observer went to press.
Goulding believes Shaw has all the right credentials. "It's a great signing as Darren's a superb professional," he said.
"He was at Brisbane under Wayne Bennett, he has played at London Broncos and Salford. He's a Super League player and a leader on the field, so I will make him team captain.
"Darren knows what to do, he isn't one of these ranters and
ravers and just goes about his job. The lads know what to
expect.
"I needed someone like him and I'll be very happy if he signs for
the club."
The Hornets boss has also captured Australian hooker Janan Billings who played for Gateshead last season.
The coach also hopes to agree a deal with ex-Widnes hooker Mike Briggs and feels the duo will compliment each other.
"Janan is a big defensive player while Mike is very quick and
both have a big part to play either starting the game or from the
bench."
Talks are also being held with former Warrington player Andy
Leatham and ex-Saint Mark Costello.
Goulding has no illusions about the difficulties of the challenge ahead, but he is upbeat about the progress the club has made in recent weeks.
"I am desperate to do well. There are players Saints and Oldham have let go who are desperate to prove a point," he said. "There are lads from the amateur game who are desperate to prove themselves at this level. Once you shove that into the pot anything can happen.
"We are not shouting from any rooftops, let's just get on with the job which is to keep us in National League One. Anything more than that is a bonus."
- HORNETS fans will have the chance to take a look at Goulding's new side when they take on fierce rivals Oldham in the Law Cup next Sunday.
The historic trophy will be competed for at Boundary Park, kick-off 3pm.
