Bobbie relishes task at Hornets

AFTER 12 months out of the game, new Hornets player-coach Bobbie Goulding is looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead at Spotland.

As revealed in the Observer last week, the 31-year-old former Great Britain scrum-half took charge of the club this week after agreeing a one-year deal, initially on a voluntary basis.

"It's an opportunity to get back into the game with a really well established club," he said, "that's what caught my eye. I've been at the top as a player and I want to go there as a coach."

Goulding's first task is to sign players and put his backroom staff in place. Hornets have the annual Law Cup fixture against Oldham on 4 January, so time is of the essence.

"I was on the phone for six hours on Wednesday trying to get players," Goulding confirmed. "I've no doubt we can get a good squad together - I'm aiming for 24 to 25 players."

Chairman Ray Talor believes the appointment has gone down well and isn't worried about Goulding's chequered history at clubs including St Helens, Leigh, Widnes, Salford and Huddersfield.

"Bobbie would be the first to admit he's had a somewhat colourful career," he said, "but when I spoke to him about coming to Hornets he was absolutely determined to move forward in a positive manner.

"I am thrilled to have signed such a big name in the game. Bobbie has surprised us all by offering his services on a voluntary basis to endorse his commitment to rugby league and in particular to Rochdale," he added.

Goulding was equally glowing in his praise of Taylor. "Ray's very enthusiastic. Speaking to people in the game, he's well respected and people have got a lot of time for him."
