Crown Green Bowls

ROCHDALE has chalked up a major success in crown green bowling with the appointment of two top officials.

Harold Hull has been voted in as president of the Greater Manchester Crown Green Bowling Association. He is also number two in the British Parks Association.

Eddie Melvin has taken up the position of chairman and deputy president of the regional organisation.

It is the first time a Rochdale official has taken charge at regional level and it bodes well for the future of the sport in the borough.

A delighted Harold Hull said: "We're both very proud and hope it's a good thing for bowling in the town. We will push Rochdale, and especially the junior side, to ensure a healthy future locally."

Eddie, who helped to set up the local junior league, served 13 years on the Central Lancashire Men's League committee but now sees the development of young players as his main task.

"Almost half of last year's Greater Manchester junior squad came from Rochdale and we're hoping, next season, to set up an inter-town junior league," he said.

Harold was heavily involved in junior bowls until a couple of years ago and helped organise the Observer junior knockout.

Both are qualified Crown Green referees.
