Barton gets in the mood for records

30/ 9/2003

RACHEL Barton was in record-breaking form again as Aquabears Masters enjoyed a fruitful trip to Scarborough for the North Eastern Short Course Championships.

She posted new best times in the 50m freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and 100m individual medley, where she slashed 15 seconds off the previous record.

Club-mate Audrey Smith set a new fastest time in the 200m backstroke and backed it up with gold in the 100m backstroke.

The rest of the ladies' squad were un to scratch too. Julie Smith (200m freestyle) and Joanne Glynn (200m breaststroke) both claimed gold while Jean Ackroyd picked up silver in the 50m backstroke.

All the men came away with medals, with Neville Barton leading the way by claiming golds in the 50m and 100m freestyle, and the 50m and 100m breaststroke. Phil Cropper claimed three wins (100m breaststroke, butterfly and individual medley), while Don Fletcher came home first in the 100m backstroke and freestyle. Chris Travis was the sprint specialist with golds in the 50m backstroke and freestyle).

The most senior squad member, 81-year-old Alan Brown, proved age is no barrier by taking silver gong in the 50m backstroke.
