Lockett wins Robinson run

28/ 3/2003

BIG-hearted athletes have been putting on their running shoes to help Springhill Hospice.

More than 90 people took part in the Colin Robinson Race on Tuesday night.

Sponsorship raised £150 for the Hospice in Broad Lane.

The run was from the Hospice to Oldham Road, along Shaw Road and Rochdale Road, and back to the Hospice.

The annual event was launched by Rochdale Harriers' captain and former top-class international Colin Robinson in 1994.

The overall winner was David Lockett of Salford Harriers. He completed the 4.3 mile course in 22 mins 11 secs.

He scooped a case of Worthington's Classic beer for his efforts.

The over 70s female prize was won by 70-year-old Louise Gilchrist of Wardle. The over 70s male award was won by 72-year-old Derek Clutterbuck of Whitworth,

One notable absence this year was veteran Rochdale runner Andy O'Sullivan.

Former policeman Andy was unable to run after being taken ill after the Wilmslow Half Marathon on Sunday for which he had been the commentator.

Andy said: "I really wanted to take part, but I strained my voice."
