Owen crowned best for March

A SCINTILLATING start to the season has seen Hornets full-back Paul Owen named the Rugby League World National League's player of the month for March.

Owen, one of Hornets' most consistent performers during their successes of the past two seasons, has scorched in for 11 tries in the opening nine games of the season, as well as providing Martin Hall's side with genuine solidity at the back.

"Over the time he has been at the club he has improved season on season, and this year he's hit top form," said Hall of the 24-year-old East Leeds product.

"In general, he doesn't make any mistakes. He's improved on his pace and has everything you want in a full-back. He's arguably the best number one outside Super League."

Owen was both surprised and happy to have been nominated. He said: "It was a bit of a shock, but I'm pleased.

"I'm playing well at the moment, much more consistently. I think my only bad game was against Salford.

"I've scored a few tries, more than I did in all of last season, so it's going well.

"There's still room for improvement and I'm working on some aspects of my defence with Martin in training."

Also included in the Rugby League World Team of the Month is loose forward Damian Ball. He is playing some of his best rugby since arriving at Hornets, particularly on attack.

Former Hornets player Jon Aston, now at Hull KR, won the February award.

• HORNETS travel to Swinton on Sunday for an Arriva Trains Cup tie, kick-off 3pm.

Hornets only injury doubt is prop-forward Paul Southern who left the field last week during the match against Oldham with a hamstring problem.
