Dale stun league leaders

14/12/2002

ROCHDALE got back to winning ways in magnificent fashion, with a stunning 4-0 win over league leaders Hartlepool United.

Clive Platt gave Dale a shock lead in the 23rd minute, heading Matt Doughty's cross into the bottom corner out of keeper Anthony Williams' reach. The advantage was doubled just before half-time when Lee McEvilly struck from close range.

Hartlepool would have been expected to mount some sort of comeback in the second half, but Dale had other ideas and went three-up thanks to Paul Connor's 55th minute strike from the edge of the area. And good work from Connor on the right set up McEvilly to head home a fourth goal and send Dale fans into ecstacy seven minutes later.

It was easily Dale's best performance under the managership of Paul Simpson, who'll be hoping they can carry that form into the FA Cup replay against Bristol Rovers at Spotland on Tuesday.
