Olympic girls serve up a special at the seaside

FIVE novice teams and one intermediate team from Rochdale Olympic Gymnastics Club travelled to Blackpool to compete in the annual North West Championships.

Each gymnast competed on one piece of apparatus, with the team total taken from places gained on the four pieces.

Top Rochdale scorers in the Novice Championship were Katie Hertzog, Melanie Makin, Victoria Walsh, and Jenny Watson who finished 13th with 32.783 points.

The highlights were a clean beam routine by Walsh who scored 8.55, and a well performed floor routine by Watson which gained a score of 9.133.

Nicole Bolton, Claire Skeels, Jemma Hayes, and Robyn Carter finished 14th with a combined team score of 32.333. Skeels scored 9.50 on the asymmetric bars to take first place.

Other Rochdale competitors in the novice section were Caprice Coen, Samantha Brady, Victoria Abbott, Victoria Stanton, Nicole Duffy, Eloise Hayward, Hannah Gooch, Bethany Leigh, Gillian MacDonald, Jenny Wiseman, Amy Eccleston, and Emma Broadbent.

The intermediate team of Abigail Towriss, Brenda Hilton, Michelle Humphreys, and Micaela Walker finished third with a score of 33.216. Towriss was third on vault, with a score of 7.233, and Hilton was first on bars with a score of 9.75.
