Rochdale AFC appeals to MPs for help to survive ITV Digital crisis

14/ 6/2002

ROCHDALE Football Club is pleading for help from the town's MPs in persuading the Government to take action over the ITV Digital crisis, and save clubs like them from financial ruin.

The club has written to Rochdale MP Lorna Fitzsimons and Norden and Bamford MP Jim Dobbin to plead their case and ask them to get Prime Minister Tony Blair and Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell to step in on their behalf.

In a statement, Rochdale AFC urges the Government to take action over what it calls the "deliberate bankrupting of ITV Digital".

It asks that the Government applies pressure on ITV Digital's owners, Carlton and Granada, honour their agreements with the Football League and seeks assurances that money owed to the league will be paid.

It also says it should review the practice of paying dividends to the digital broadcasters, and says the Independent Television Commission should review whether Carlton and Granada are "fit and proper people to hold public service broadcasting licences".
