Dale had got off to the perfect start when teenager Kevin Townson, returning from suspension, latched on to a Sean McAuley through ball to give his side a second minute lead.

But in the second half, Hollins' side sat back and invited the home side to push for the leveller.

Steve Banks produced a brilliant reaction save to keep out Steve Flack but was powerless as veteran defender Alex Watson volleyed past him on 62 minutes.

In the end, though, a share of the spoils was perhaps fair.

Rochdale substitute Paul Ware missed a great opportunity to give his side a much-needed win but contrived to hit the inside of the post with an open goal at his mercy.
