Hornets star set to become a Warrior

29/11/2001

In an emotional speech after receiving the supporters' club Player of the Season trophy, following Sunday's Law Cup final, Sculthorpe announced that he would be joining Wigan Warriors later this week.

Several clubs have since shown an interest in the Great Britain Under-21 international, including London Broncos who put in a bid recently. But when top club Wigan made their move the young prop decided it was too good an opportunity to miss.

Sculthorpe has mixed feelings about leaving Hornets, but feels the time is now right for a move to full-time rugby.

"It's a very emotional day for me. I got choked up as I did that speech after the presentation," he said.

"It will feel very strange. I'll be training at Wigan, and then getting ready to come to the Hornets training in the evening, which I've got into the habit of doing.

"I'm leaving a brilliant set of lads but I felt the timing was right. I've now got to look to the future and hopefully do well for Wigan."

Sculthorpe feels that he his leaving the club in good hands, and that Hornets will be competing for the Premiership this season.

He added: "I think Hornets have got to be first or second favourites for the title with Huddersfield, Leigh and Oldham the other possibilities."

Sculthorpe hopes to complete the formalities later this week.
