Roar of approval as Des 'Worms' his way into Dale fans' affections

The big, green Rochdale AFC mascot is a huge hit with autograph hunting supporters, and not just the younger ones.

"I'm signing about 40 or 50 autographs a game now," he said.

"The kids love me and I got quite a few Easter eggs from them this year, but I'm also popular with a lot of the adults.

"Two people came over from Dublin recently just to get a photograph of me with them, and I'm supposed to be turning the Christmas lights on in Rochdale this year."

Desmond's popularity stems from the fact he is one of the most energetic and charismatic mascots in the Football League.

But it's not easy being so active in the pre-match build-up and the half-time break.

He has to drink energy drinks before he arrives at Spotland Stadium. Then, once he is at the ground, he guzzles a two-litre bottle of water, a pint of orange and eats sandwiches supplied by the club as part of his pre-match preparation.

"It's hard work running around the pitch, keeping everyone entertained and throwing sweets to the children in the crowd," he said.

"And I have to do a lot of stretching so I don't pull muscles doing 'The Worm' or any other moves.

"It's not as easy as it might look."
