Proctor first home in town’s 10k

10/ 7/2007

THIS YEAR's Rochdale 10k attracted a high quality field and around 100 more runners than last year.

The avourite was Rochdale's star track runner, David Proctor. He started the race a little steadier than in 2006, tucking into fourth place behind Rossendale and Salford runners as the athletes exited Springfield Park.

By the top of Roch Valley Way, Proctor decided to take the lead and was just at the front of the leading pack. As the race developed he accelerated, finishing the undulating course in 32 min 52 sec, over a minute ahead of second place Jonathon Ferguson from Rossendale and third place David Lockett of Salford.

Josefa Terrim, who won the ladies race last year, beat her 2006 time, but with more runners and an overall stronger field she was unable to hold on to her title. The first lady finisher this year was Maria Lowe of Salford Harriers who clocked 39 min 7 sec.

The men's team award went to Rochdale Harriers, the three counters being winner David Proctor, his brother Matt Proctor who won the Junior Male category and finished 5th overall in 35:06 and veteran Chris Leach who ran exceptionally well to finish in 37:04.

The increasing strength and depth of the Rochdale men's team was shown by the number of runners finishing in under 40 minutes. Eight managed sub-40 times this year compared to only five last year. Junior Matt Proctor was about five minutes faster. The ladies team also improved, with notable performances from Kay Hill, seven minutes faster than last year, and Diane Winterburn and Kirsten Johnson who were each two and a half minutes quicker.

TV celebrity chef Andrew Nutter posted a very respectable time of 55 min 8 sec, placing him 209th overall. The individual results for Rochdale Harriers were as follows:

Winner: David Proctor, 32:52;5 Matt Proctor, 35:06; 11 Chris Leach, 37:04; 16 Chris Law, 38:08; 18 Andrew McDougall, 38:12;21 Ian Aitchison, 38:31;22 David Bentley, 38:50; 35 Paul Leary, 39:49; 39 Ian Roberts, 40:09;48 Mark Catherall, 40:51; 57 Mark Widdup, 41:33;59 Josefa Terim, 41:51; 70 Stephen Leak, 42:52;78 Dave Schofield, 43:38; 96 Huma Rahman, 45:08; 113 Nicholas Walsh, 46:08; 126 Kirsten Johnson, 47:27; 136 William Telfer Knox, 48:18; 139 Diane Winterburn, 48:27; 169 Linda Evans, 50:55; 172 Kimberley Whitehead, 51:11; 175 Shahzad Zia, 51:34; 176 Kay Hill, 51:36; 182 Stephen Wild, 52:12; 184 Jill Hutchinson, 52:35; 192 Christine Deasey, 53:03; 202 Joanne Walsh,54:38; 215 Susan Shepherd, 56:15; 226 Amanda Thirsk, 59:20; 228 Janet Barker, 1:00:01; 229 Kath Allison, 1:01:23; 234 Kathryn Diver, 1:02:55; 237 Gillian Phillips, 1:07:55; 238 Mike Winstanley, 1:07:55; 240 Marie Coldman, 1:10:23.
