All go for Whitworth sports

14/10/2008

WHITWORTH Community High school raised the bar even higher as they managed to play nine different school competitions in one week, allowing more than 200 students to take part in extra curricular sporting activity which is a fantastic achievement.

The football teams for all five year groups played Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School with the Years 9, 10 and 11 travelling away. All three teams battled bravely but were beaten by stronger sides.

BRGS brought their Year 7 and 8 teams to Whitworth and the younger members of the school gained a little revenge for the previous three losses.

The Year 7 team took a 5-1 lead only to ease off and let BRGS back into the game, the match ending 6-6. Man of the match was Jay Stotan.

The Year 8 team made a disappointing start and went 3-0 down. They fought back to 3-3 and were unfortunate not to convert a penalty to take the lead. BRGS scored a late goal to give them the win. Man of the match was Todd Whittle for some solid defending.

In their first netball game together, the Year 7 pupils captained by Rainbow Whittaker made a great start against a strong Alder Grange team.

Rainbow worked hard to settle the team and they began to gel. Strong performances by Demi Smith and Zoe Bennett gave the team great confidence. The player of the game was goalkeeper Ellie Morley who worked hard throughout. This was a promising start for the year 7 team, well done!

The Year 9 girls, also playing their first game, battled hard against strong opposition. Amy Alderson captained the team well, giving clear instructions. They came under constant pressure and displayed some strong defence in the second half. Close to the end of the match the team started to play particularly well and with good build up play from Jasmine Laycock and Carly Pieterson. The ball was played into the circle and Ruby Taylor took full advantage.

The year 10 netball team started under pressure from Alder Grange. They marked well and took advantage of opportunities to move the ball up the court. Elouise Drummond worked hard as goalkeeper and did well in defence.

In the second half the girls settled into a rhythm. Katie Appleby flew from one end of the court to the other, joining up play well. Megan Mawdsley and Bethany O’Malley were rewarded for good persistence in the shooting circle. Overall a solid first game of the year.

The final team of the week, Year 11 badminton travelled to Alder Grange and battled hard.

They had some very close games and missed out on winning by only a few points. Daniella Walsh and Kerrie Lawler worked extremely well together in the doubles and won their game convincingly.

A superb week with a fantastic number of students taking part and performing and playing to their best ability. Well done to all who participated.
