Boro m-ince their knockout opponents

LITTLEBOROUGH moved into the third round of the Lancashire Sunday Trophy with ease beating Athletico (Ince) 4-0.

With the chances created it should have been double figures.

From the kick-off Athletico were on the back foot, and it took only six minutes for Boro to open the scoring with a back flick.

The game continued with nearly all the play in the Athletico half.

Anything which got into the Boro half was quickly dealt with by a defence well marshalled by the solid Williams.

The Boro midfield was also dominant, snuffing out many of the Athletico moves before they had hardly got going.

Boro’s lead was doubled on 37 minutes, direct from a freekick.

Three minutes later the ball was hammered into the net from close range and it was 3-0.

Timmy Astley was unlucky not to add to the account when he lobbed the keeper only to be foiled by the bar.

Boro looked to have scored again when the ball rolled into the net. But it rolled out of the back where a peg had been dislodged and a corner was awarded by the referee who saw the ball behind the goal.

Athletico finally had their first chance - after an hour’s play.

But Boro were soon back in command and Astley scored with a powerful header.

Two good late chances were fluffed, and Williams hit the bar with a header, but Boro had done more than enough.

The choice for man of the match was Andy Foster.
