Spartans on the road for opener

6/ 9/2008

WHITWORTH Spartans play their first game of the season this afternoon when they travel to take on Keighley Albion A.

Keighley didn’t have a very successful last season, just avoiding relegation.

Spartans’ coach Lee Durrant has a squad of 40 players to pick from, as the club’s Ateam doesn’t kick off for another two weeks.

Durrant brings in a few new young faces for this afternoon’s game.

Jimmy Woodruff makes his debut on the wing, with Kieron Bradford on the opposite wing.

Both the Mills twins get their chance on the bench after some very impressive performances in recent friendlies.

Durrant is looking for a good performance to get the campaign off to a good start.

All players, both first team and A team, should meet at the Red Lion at 12.15pm prompt to collect new club tracksuits.

THE reformed Milnrow and Newhey Rugby League Club plays its first league fixture today, away to Folly lane.

With two tough pre-season games under their belt they will be hoping to make a good start to the season, but with eight players injured or away on holiday the squad is a little threadbare.

Coach Alex Butterworth said the team is struggling a little for numbers, but the 17 to go out will have enough individual talent to match any team in the league.

He added: "We just need to start playing as a team, and work on our completion rate which was low in the friendlies.

"Defensively I think we are at a good level which is always a solid base to build from.

Players and spectators should meet at Firgrove WMC at 12.30 pm.

The club is still on the lookout for new players and committee members. Training is at Firgrove playing fields on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm

ROCHDALE Cobras play their first game of the season today, at Balderstone Park against Halton Sims Cross.

Kick off is at 2.30pm, players meet at the Flying Horse at 12 noon.

The match sponsor is Stephen Holt Opticians.

THE next event in the Wayne English Testimonial programme is a rugby league quiz night at the Plough Inn, Oldham Road, Rochdale, on Wednesday 17 September.

As a Rochdale-based player, Wayne invites all the loyal rugby league supporters to join him for a quiz with prizes, a raffle, and cheese and biscuits.

The evening starts at 7.30pm, and admittance is £3.
