A touch of Beijing comes to Springhill

SPORTING stars enjoyed a taste of golden glory when they demonstrated their skills during a disabled mini-Olympics.
A variety of activities were staged for disabled people during the competition at Springhill Sports Centre, including turbo javelin, long jump, 100 metres sprint, wheelchair hurdles and boccia.
The event, staged by Sunsport and Rochdale Borough Disability Sports and Leisure Forum, was hailed a success and brought the Olympic spirit of Beijing to Rochdale.
Donna Stott, Link4Life competitions manager, said: "Disabled people have as much right and desire as able-bodied people to compete.
"It’s important that disabled people have the opportunity to experience competition and the emotions attached with winning and losing."
The competition concluded with a ceremony in which triumphant participants were presented with medals by Peter Jackson, Link4Life principal sports and leisure officer.
Sunsport is a holiday activity programme which supports young disabled people.
It is funded through the Rochdale Youth Service and managed by Rochdale Gateway Leisure Ltd.
