Harriers’ rising star Jenny earns hat-trick of firsts

5/ 8/2008

ROCHDALE HARRIERS had a busy July competing in numerous races far and wide.

The Sale Sizzler series of 5k races are a perennial favourite with many of the athletes. This year was no exception, and in the first race Paul Leary led the local pack home in 18 min 44 secs. Kris Robinson was well down on his normal pace, clocking 20 min 18 sec, with Josefa Terim hot on his heels just six seconds behind.

Rising star Jenny Brown, pictured right, achieved a hat-trick of first Rochdale lady finisher in three races. At the hilly three-mile John Metcalfe Memorial race she took second place overall in 21 min 06 sec. Next, she ran her first fell race at Stoodley Pike, finishing in 28 min 25 sec despite wearing road shoes on the difficult descent. Then, in the Royton Trail race up Tandle Hill, she was the first of the six Rochdale ladies who competed. She posted 44 min 13 secs on the 5.5 mile trail race.

Other excellent performances at the Royton race included Ian Aitchison, winner of the male veteran 50 category in 36.33 and about two minutes ahead of Rochdale’s second fastest competitor, Chris Hill.

In the Ladies veteran 45 category, Chris Deasey won in 46 .52, while team-mates Kay Hill and Jill Hutchison took second and fourth slots respectively.

Four Harriers dared to run the 17.5 mile and 4,500ft Holme Moss fell race. This started at Holmfirth and took a figure of eight route, including Crowden, Laddow Rocks and 1,800ft Black Hill along the way. First home for Rochdale was in-form John Armstrong, posting 3hrs 42 mins 08 secs. Ultradistance runner Denis Lucas was next in 3-42.59 to win the male veteran 65 category too. John Mayall was pleased with an exactly mid-pack finish in 3-44.44. Stephen Leak followed not far behind in 3-49.48.

The boghoppers had an absolute field day at the Waugh’s Well Fell Race off Edenfield Road. The non-stop July rain created many bogs to trap the unlucky. The camaraderie between clubs saw many runners helping extract each other from the quagmires rather than just running past and taking advantage.

Martin O’Reilly was Rochdale’s first finisher, clocking 40.09 with Nigel Shaw exactly a minute behind him.
