Twenty hours - and not a bite

John Hooper

ANGLING: A DISTURBING report comes from a Castleton AS member who has fished the society’s waters for 20 hours in the past week and not had a single fish.

This, on top of an extremely poor match result, has got me as a chairman extremely worried that fish thieves may have been at work on the CAS controlled sections.

There have been lots of matches while I’ve been away on holiday, so I’ll start with Newhey and District’s visit to Oakhanger Mere with the Club Cup as the prize.

In first place, with a net of carp and skimmers weighing 46-1-0, was Damen Newall. Second placed Lol Butler caught the same species to weigh in 38-8-0. Paul Hurst, in third place, caught carp, skimmers and tench weighing 20-10-0.

Rochdale Walton members held two sweepstakes, and a match for the Liberty Cup at Whitmore fishery.

The sweepstakes once again produced excellent weights for three-hour matches.

The first was won by Daz Armstrong who caught ide and skimmers weighing 43-9-0 from peg five. In second place was Pete Mottram who weighed in 31-14-0 of ide and skimmers. Martin Keurick was third with 25-14-0 of tench.

Daz Armstrong also won the second sweep by netting 28-9-0 of skimmers and tench from peg 25. In second place, with 17-10-0 of the same, was Martin Kenrick. Simon Newshaw was third with 15-0-0 of ide.

The Liberty Cup, fished at Whitmore, produced a poor result but an excellent specimin perch of 4-0-0 which was caught by winner John Kershaw. He also had 6lb of silvers for a total of 10-4-0. Pete Filton was second with 9-10-0 of small carp, and John McFarland was third with 8-10-0 of carp.

There have been some problems with fish thefts on Walton’s Syke reservoir, with carp going missing. The matter is being investigated by the police.

Todmorden juniors have had two matches, one on Croft and one on the canal.

The under 12s results at Croft were Joe Blackley 6-4-0, Callam Andrew 5-14-0. Under 16s - Alex Smethurst 9-7-0, Rowan Priestley 1-5-0.

On the canal it was Callam Andrew 0-6-0, Joe Blackley and Jake Nightingale 0-0-8. Under 16s - Rowan Priestley 0-5-0, Alex Smethurst 0-4-8.

Todmorden’s senior trophy match on Croft was won by Bruce Clarke with 35-0-0. His catch was eight bream and two carp. Second placed Craig Howarth weighed in 14-13-0. Steve Ashworth was third with 14-0-0.

The Todmorden open match on the canal (Summit and the Dead Length) produced some excellent weights.

Martin Taylor won by catching 11 bream from the Dead Length, on pole with worm and caster. He put 29-13-0 on the scales.

Second placed George Golbram also caught bream weighing 26-4-0. Third was Dave Bradley who caught bream and chub weighing 17-4-0.

Castleton’s last but one Wednesday sweepstake was very poor, with Dave Redfern needing only 1-8-0 for his second win in a row. No-one else broke the pound. Paul Chadwick was second on 0-15-8 and john Fletcher was third with 0-15-0.

This Wednesday’s Castleton sweepstake was held on Whitworth Valley’s Lane Head reservoir.

Winner John Hooper caught bream, ide and tench weighing 11-13-0 from peg two. In second place, on peg eight, was John Fletcher who had the same species for 5-8-0. Dave Redfern in third place weighed in 2-15-0 from peg three.

Rochdale and District’s spring league match was held on the round lodge at Trows. It was won by Mike Beattie who caught skimmers and roach on caster for 4-1-0. Billy Brierley was third with 3-14-0 of roach.
