Brown tans his fell race rivals

10/ 5/2008

THE Ravenstones fell race was the third fixture in Rochdale Harriers’ fell race Grand Prix. Billed as a comfortable 10 miler, it didn’t quite match its description.

Due to unforeseen circumstances the route was changed to a shorter 8.3 miles while retaining the same ascent of 1,200ft. This made for some tough climbs along the way.

Many of the finishers completed the course with an orange tint they likened to fake tan, picked up from the Ravenstones’ clay along the way.

The race was won in style by Salford’s John Brown. He romped home in 64 mins 42 secs, more than three minutes ahead of second place Tom Brunt (Holmfirth).

The ladies' race was won by Brown’s partner Anna Lupton (Radcliffe) in 79 mins 50 secs. She bettered second placed Rachel Chatwin by more than five minutes.

The rising form of Martin O’Reilly saw him finish first from Rochdale Harriers (81 mins 05 secs). Next was Nigel Shaw (83 mins 45 secs), and third was Mark Hayes (87 mins 43 secs).

Rochdale’s Anna Blomfield took a bad fall during the race.. Even so she kept up a terrific pace and finished an agonising one second behind the winner of her age category in 95 mins 31 secs.

ANDREW McDougall ran his first sub-18 minute 5K in an event at Alexandra Park. His time of 17 mins 55 secs placed him sixth overall. Matthew Cox had an excellent race. He timed 21 mins 38 secs to be 29th out of 116 finishers.
