Derby duel

31/12/2007

A DING-DONG derby in the third division of the Lancashire GMC Super League, at Castleton, saw the home side pip Littleborough 6-4.

The visitors swept into a 3-0 lead through Kevin Atkinson, Simon Gulaiczuk and Jim Holt who included an 18-darter, but Castleton won the next five sets.

Tony Brophy started the revival, winning 3-1 and hitting 180, while Simon Darby, Tony McGuinness, Colin Shaw and Les Matthews gave them a 5-3 advantage.

Littleborough man-of-the-match Graham Wilde included a slick 16-darter in taking the ninth set and giving his team hopes of sharing the spoils. But Bob Tankard took the final set in style to earn Castleton the bonus points and deepen Littleborough’s plight as relegation strugglers.

Rochdale, too, have a mighty relegation fight on their hands in the premier division. On Sunday they went down 6-4 to Lune Valley  having led at one stage. Steve Jackson, Stuart Ellis, Dave Simpson and Pete Rothwell put Dale 4-3 up, but after that not only did they fail to take another set, they were unable to win another leg.

Rochdale Borough’s first division match against Blackburn was postponed.
