Carly earns GB call-up

THE elite of cross-country running competed in the UK Liverpool Cross Challenge at Sefton Park last weekend, with places in the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team at stake.
Among the field was a little known athlete from the Lancashire leagues, namely Rochdale’s Carly Needham.
Having secured convincing victories at local level this season, the UK Cross Challenge was an ideal opportunity to see how she would fair against some of the top lady runners in the country.
The race was a hard fought affair, with the first and second places going to Hayley Yelling (27 mins 42 secs) and her sister-in-law Liz Yelling (27 mins 58 secs).
Needham worked her way up into the leading contenders, but Felicity Milton, of Durham, inched past her towards the end to steal fifth place by two seconds.
Needham’s time was 28 mins 34 secs.
Finishing among the elite athletes even took the commentators by surprise, as they scrambled furiously through their papers trying to find the name of this young upstart.
Needham’s efforts were rewarded by a call later that evening, inviting her to be first reserve for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team in the 2007 European Cross Country Championships which will be held in Spain next month.
