Pilling weathers field to win well

GOLF: STEVE Pilling had to beat the weather, as well as a strong field, to take the Wilkie Bard Trophy at Hopwood on Saturday.
The seven handicapper chalked up a commendable 40 points in difficult conditions to edge out both Andy Davis and John Dixon on a countback.
Meanwhile, the Manchester Ladies’ captain’s prize went to Karen Clayton who had four shots to spare over Maureen Delaney and Edith Jones.
The captain’s final at Castle Hawk saw Steve Simpson take the main prize after a tough 36-hole battle.
His 139 was one too good for Kevin Daley and Bob Murphy.
The past captains’ competition at Tunshill was won by the trio of Ray McCormick, Fred Gowers amd Dave Foster who beat Derek Williams, Simon Holdena and Dave Thornton by two points.
Two top prizes competed for by Tunshill juniors brought close finishes. Craig Holland lifted the John Yearsley Trophy and Brandon Petrillo took the Paul Holden Plate.
Another close finish came in the fourth round of the veterans contest at Lobden where Phil Harwood’s 66 was just too good for Paul Lord and Andrew Cropper.
