Spartans go oh so close in Sevens at Grimethorpe

Whitworth Spartans came within three seconds of winning the Grimethorpe Sevens after conceding a try in the final play of the Grand Final against Greetland who lifted the trophy.
Spartans recorded an easy win against Rotherham Rugby Union Club in their first game of the tournament with tries from Dillon O’Shay, Kes Brooks, Rob Clegg and Lee Durrant.
Guest stars Napolian Navaka and Ben Komia scored some scintillating tries throughout the tournament in typical Fijian style.
Spartans faced host club Grimethorpe in their second match and put in another impressive performance to win 28-6 with tries from the Fijian duo, Lee Acky, Durrant and McCormack.
In the final pool game the side faced Doncaster and it was a more even contest with Whitworth progressing by 18-12. Rob Clegg was the star of this match with a hat-trick of tries.
The semi-final saw Spartans face Wakefield and they booked their place in the final with a 26-12 victory. Ben Komia and Joe Bingo scoring the pick of the tries. In the final the Whitworth outfit and Greetland went all out for the win.
Greetland led 16-8 at half-time but the Spartans bounced back from the restart with Irvin, Durrant and Komia scoring in quick succession. Whitworth were leading 20-16 going into the final play when their opponents fed the ball wide for their winger to seal a last gasp winner.
Although Whitworth Spartans didn’t manage to hold on to win the tournament it was a successful day for the side’s first competitive senior outing.
