Must-win clash for injury-hit Spartans

11/10/2008

WHITWORTH Spartans travel to Grimethorpe this afternoon for a must-win match. After their surprise defeat against Westcraven, Whitworth need to get back on track with a good performance today.

Grimethorpe will be after revenge after the thumping they were given in the final game of last season.

Spartans’ coach Lee Durrant has a few injury worries so may include a few of the Academy side after some good performances by the Mills twins and Kieron Bradford.

The Academy team is at home to Fernley Falcons. It’s still a building process for Sutton’s youngsters, but every game they are getting stronger and more confident. Hopefully they can produce a good performance today and get their first win under their belts. All players meet 12 noon at the Red Lion.

Rob Clegg played his part for Lancashire last Sunday as his side comfortably beat South Africa 56-16 at Leigh sports village. He started at hooker and didn’t put a foot wrong. It was a great experience for him, and the club wish him well for any other representative honours.

A fundraising event has been arranged for next Saturday, 18 October, a ‘Curry-Oke’ at Lobden Golf Club. Tickets are £5, and all players, families and supporters are invited. The fun stars at 7pm.

Milnrow and Newhey have a tricky home fixture today against Blackpool Scorpions.

Several players are out due to injuries and work commitments, but coach Alex Butterworth is more than confident his charges have the ability to see off the challenge from the seasiders and keep their lead on top of the division.

Milnrow and Newhey would like to thank Steven Ashworth of Apex Logistics, Woodbine Street East, for his sponsorship of today’s fixture.

In these difficult financial times sponsors like Apex Logistics help keep amateur sport alive, and the Milnrow based club really appreciates the help from its friends and sponsors, especially Firgrove Workingmens Club which is opening prior to the fixture for spectators. The club is also supplying the man of the match awards.
