Mayfield’s young guns win a cracker
4/10/2008
ELLAND visited Castleton Sports Centre last Saturday for Mayfield B’s first home game of the season, and what a cracking game it turned out to be.
After losing their first two away matches Mayfield’s young guns were out to show the home support what they were capable of.
Elland had a big, young side and it looked like a tough game was on the cards.
Both teams went all out from the off, but the home side mastered the visitors in every department.
The Mayfield pack was totally dominant in the middle of the park and never gave Elland time to settle.
Gleeson and Nuttall battled well against their opposite numbers and combined well when Nuttall broke down the right. He slipped the ball back on the inside to Gleeson who touched down then converted his try.
Haddaway was next on the scoresheet. He showed touches of his old self as he wrongfooted the strong Elland defence and made the conversion a formality for Gleeson.
Outhalf Johnson then put up a high bomb which the visiting fullback couldn’t hold onto, and Ashton pounced for another converted try.
Elland pulled a couple of scores back and never looked like giving in.
Ratu then made a swerving run, and a sweet pass to the supporting Johnson put him clear for a run in.
The next try was a reverse, with Johnson doing the work for Ratu to reap the rewards.
Both tries were converted and the final score was 30-20 to Mayfield.
Nuttall picked up the man of the match award, although were were great performances from Gleeson, Haddaway, Hartley and Hancock.
ROCHDALE Cobras won their second league game on the bounce when they beat Leigh East 48-26.
Boothman, Bird, Wild and Parry were missing due to injuries and replaced by Tierney, Catlow, Morris and Jackson who proved that strength in numbers wins games.
Cobras’ attack was something to behold, with centres Butterworth and Hughes wowing the crowd and both going 60 meters to score fine individual tries.
Fijian fullback Maxi, and Australian forward Charles also got in on the action by scoring tries on their debuts.
Giant winger Walsh stormed in for two tries. Hooker Hutchins went over from close range, and stand-off Corcoran helped himself to a brace.
Webster and Kershaw, also making their debuts, came off the bench and put in solid performances.
Leigh ‘s stand-off marshalled his giant forwards and caused Rochdale heaps of problems in defence. But for the efforts of Chadwick, Catlow, Hughes and Tierney it may have been a different story.
Man of the match was Catlow, closely followed by Hutchins and Maxi.
