Mayfield miss out at Thatto

PERHAPS it was a sign of things to come as Mayfield’s coach to Wednesday night’s match at Thatto Heath arrived late.

And, chairman Barry Edwards, who was locking up the clubhouse was left behind in the rush to get away.

The team finally arrived at Thatto Heath’s ground whose spanking new clubhouse and the environs wanted for nothing, except that is floodlights.

With dark clouds looming ominously on the horizon the light was clearly going to be a problem.

The game finally got under way at 7pm and despite the delay the visitors took an early lead as Grant Bithell nipped in for a try.

Thatto hit back and in the 10th minute James Hitchmough set up a try for Geoff Williams. Andy Stott converted.

Mistakes and missed chances were then the order of the day for Mayfield who went further behind when Mike Woods crossed for a well-taken try in the corner.

Just before the interval Bithell made a scintillating break but, once again, poor handling prevented a score.

Five minutes into the second half, impressive approach play from the home side saw Shaun Quin break through two flimsy tackles to touch down. Stott added the extras.

Mayfield were on the ropes and it wasn’t long before Mark Beech onto a neat grubber to add to the hosts’ tally.

On the hour Kieron Maddocks raced in out wide for a try, and Stott added a penalty for a 26-4 lead.

In the interim, Eric Johnson scampered in for a Mayfield try. Todd O’Brien tagged on the two.

The gloomy evening turned gloomier for Mayfield in the 77th minute as Thatto’s Quin capped a man of the match performance to score his second. Stott converted.

Who knows? Barry Edwards might have had the right idea.
