Spartans seek tour help

WHITWORTH Spartans have been offered the tour of a lifetime next April.

They have been invited to play a two-match series in Cyprus against a Lebanese international side.

The proposal has come through former Whitworth resident Terry Preston who now lives in Cyprus and is helping to develop both rugby union and rugby League in the Lebanon.

Whitworth are looking for a main sponsor/sponsors to help fund the trip.

They will be the first Rochdale amateur side to take on an international team abroad, and coach Lee Durrant (pictured) has been told by the Lebanon Development Officer that if Whitworth can raise the funds the tour can be arranged.

Sponsorship will cover travel costs, track suits and accommodation for four days.

The sponsors will have the opportunity to travel with the team to watch the games.

Durrant said: "It’s a fabulous opportunity for the lads and everyone in Whitworth, little old Spartans playing an international side. Not many players get the chance to travel abroad to play and it would be a great honour for Spartans to represent their country. I just hope we can get a sponsor to allow this to go ahead."
