Farewell to Jeff

FORMER Rochdale Hornets' player Jeff McGilvray, who played for the club in the 1950s, has died, aged 82.

Jeff signed from Workington Town during the 1948/49 season and made his debut against Swinton on 15 January 1949.

He had played rugby league in Australia before joining the forces, and while stationed in England he played for the Australian Forces.

Jeff became the first overseas player to sign for Workington and was subsequently transferred to Hornets with whom he made 94 appearances in seven seasons. He scored nine tries and kicked nine goals.

Norman Short and Peter Birchall of Hornets Ex-Players Association, and Hornets' chairman David Vining represented the club at his funeral which was held at Overdale Crematorium, Chorley Road, Bolton.
